Field Hockey Earns First League Win

Engineers blank St. Lawrence, 3-0

TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore Megan Jones recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team to a 3-0 victory over St. Lawrence University, at Harkness Field on Reunion & Homecoming Weekend. With the win, the Engineers improve to 6-3 overall (1-1 Liberty League), while the Saints drop to 2-6 (0-2 Liberty League).

Despite 10 first half shots, the Engineers were unable to solve St. Lawrence senior goaltender Kim Haab (Stowe, VT/Stowe) though the opening 35 minutes. RPI sophomore Jena Nawfel (Waterville, ME/Waterville) had four attempts in the opening frame.

Rensselaer's best chance to break the deadlock came at 29:01, when Jones (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) was denied on a point blank one-timer by Haab.

In the second half, the Engineers were finally able to break through, when Jones tallied off a cross-field pass from junior Colleen Fowler (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough Regional). The goal, which was Jones' team-leading seventh of the season, came at 50:22.

Jones then set up RPI's second goal, filter a low ball past Haab from the left side. Freshman Mikaela DiBello (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) was there on the doorstep to tap home her fourth of the campaign at 54:23.

The Engineers added an insurance goal at 59:15, thanks to sophomore Kate Batzinger's (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) first of the season. Following an RPI penalty corner, Batzinger picked up her own rebound and scored inside the left post.

RPI freshman goaltender Rachel Kaufman (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) finished with three saves for her first shutout of the season. Haab had nine stops for the visitors.
