ROCHESTER, NY – For only the second time this season, the RIT (8-1-2, 2-0-1 Liberty League) women's soccer team failed to score. The 18th ranked Tigers tied Rensselaer (5-4-3, 1-1-1 Liberty League), 0-0 on a cold and rainy afternoon at Tiger Stadium. It is RIT's ninth shut out of the season.
Shots were 15-12 in favor of RIT, while Rensselaer took five corner kicks to four for the Tigers.
Tori Riopelle got the start in net for Rensselaer, making five saves. Sienna Fisher (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg Area) got the start for RIT, playing the first 45 minutes and making one save. Kelly Rogers (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) played the second half and overtime, making two saves.
The Tigers had some good scoring chances early in the first half. In the 14th minute, RIT put the RPI defense on its heels.Anka Parzych (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) and Emily Thiel (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) each had chances blocked away by a scrambling Engineers defense.
RIT hit four posts, including three shots off the crossbar. The first came with 24 minutes to play in the opening half whenCaitlyn Daly (Glendora, CA/St. Lucy's Priory) sent a hard shot off the crossbar. Daly noticed Riopelle had crept off her line and fired a shot that was over Riopelle's head, but rang off the cross bar and out of harms way.
Rensselaer's first shot on goal came with 22:58 to play in the opening half when
Danielle Tavel fired a shot from long distance that Fisher was able to corral.
Just before halftime, Rensselaer's
Dali Alarian was in alone. Fisher came darting off her line and forced Alarian to rush her shot and pushed it wide of the net.
After a scoreless first half, Rensselaer came out in the second half and put the Tigers defense under pressure.
Jessica Dabney had a shot from distance early in the second half that Kelly Rogers (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) was able to save.
Monique Polanco (Merrick, NY/John F. Kennedy) had a great chance from inside the Rensselaer penalty area. Her shot was headed for the far left corner, but Riopelle was able to make the diving stop to keep the game scoreless.
With a little less than 17 minutes remaining in the second half, Elizabeth May (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) had a good look to give the Tigers a lead. She made a run down the channe and tried to hit a shot first time, but Riopelle tipped the shot just wide of the net. With 15 minutes to play in regulation, Dabney got behind the RIT defense and fired a shot that was just wide of the net.
Neither team generated any solid scoring chances in the first overtime. However, Rensselaer had the first good scoring chance in the second overtime when
Cori Winslow drove the RIT defense and into the Tigers penalty area. A defender blocked her first shot, and her second shot Rogers saved with a diving stop.
RIT had a flurry of activity in the final moments of the second overtime. Polanco had a shot blocked away as the Engineer's defense swarmed to preserve the tie.
With the tie, RIT is 5-5-3 all time versus Rensselaer. It is only the second game of the season the Tigers have failed to score at least one goal.
