Women's Hockey Tops Cornell in OT

Lauren Wash scores the game-winner in comeback victory

ITHACA, N.Y. - Senior Lauren Wash scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Cornell University in the ECAC Hockey opener for both teams. With the win, the Engineers improve to 3-4 overall (1-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Big Red Drop to 0-3 (0-1 ECAC Hockey).

After a relatively quiet first period, the Big Red's penalty kill units fought to keep the game scoreless through the second, killing off a 5-on-3 to start the period and a pair of back-to-back penalties in the midway through the frame. In fact, two of Cornell's best offensive chances of the period were shorthanded opportunities. On the first of the two consecutive penalties, senior Taylor Woods found an opening and went in on RPI goaltender Lovisa Selander, who knocked away Woods' attempt. Junior Brianna Veerman capitalized on an Engineers' miscue on the second penalty and took off on a breakaway, but Selander once again had the answer.

Cornell goaltender, junior Paula Voorheis, also played a big role in holding the Engineers off the board, including a key stop on a 2-on-1 midway through the second.

Doering scored the first goal of the game 3:05 into the third period when sophomore Sydnee Saracco sent a pass from the point to Doering in the slot, who roofed it home. The goal marked both Doering and Saracco's first point of the season. Alexa Gruschow's 5-on-3 power play tally just over a minute later brought the teams even.

The Engineers (3-4-0, 1-0-0 ECAC Hockey) set up a play off a faceoff in overtime, and Lauren Wash knocked in the winning goal after Gruschow sent her a feed from the corner.

Woods posted a game-high six shots on goal, while junior Hanna Bunton was close behind with five. Voorheis made 30 saves on the night.
