Field Hockey Wins 1-0 in Overtime

TROY, N.Y. - Kate Batzinger scored just 1:42 into overtime to give the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team a 1-0 victory over SUNY Oneonta in the Engineers' season finale. RPI won for the fifth time in the last six games to complete the 2015 campaign with an 11-6 record. The visiting Red Dragons fall to 5-12.

Rensselaer started the extra session with the ball and controlled it for the entirety of overtime. The game's final play was started by sophomore Jena Nawfel (Waterville, ME / Waterville), who carried the ball for a couple of strides before finding Batzinger (Niskayuna, NY / Niskayuna) just inside the circle toward the top. The sophomore fired a shot through traffic that found the back of the cage and RPI improved to 8-1 on Harkness Field.

Batzinger's goal, her first of the season, spoiled a stellar performance by Oneonta goalkeeper Krista Servedio (Shrub Oak, NY / Lakeland). The senior finished with 17 saves including nine in the second half. Classmate Rebecca Teta (Centereach, NY / Sachem North) added a defensive save for the Red Dragons.

Freshman Rachel Kaufman (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) was solid for RPI on the other end, making four saves while also thwarting several other opportunities by kicking the ball away from the opposition.

Rensselaer finished with a 28-6 edge in shots and a 13-4 advantage in penalty corners - nine in the second half.

While the Engineers' season has concluded, Oneonta returns to the field on Wednesday when it plays SUNY Cortland in the SUNYAC Tournament Semifinals (3pm).
