RPI FanshopTROY, N.Y. - For the third time in three dual meets, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's and women's swimming & diving teams both won dual meets as the Engineers defeated Vassar College, 195-5-100-.5 and 188.5-111.5, respectively. The Engineers have also swept Rochester Institute of Technology and Ithaca College and both teams boast 3-0 records.
The women's win featured an NCAA cut off the 1-meter diving board by senior
Maddie Miller (Yardley, PA / Princeton Day School) and an NCAA B cut in the 200 butterfly by sophomore
Shanny Lin (El Paso, TX / El Paso). Miller had 258.75 off the 1-meter board and Lin registered a time of 2:04.53 in the 200 fly. Lin, an All-American as a freshman, was also victorious in the 100 fly (58.81) and she helped the 200 medley relay team to first place with a time of 1:52.13. Miller was also successful off the 3-meter diving board, finishing first with 264.95 points.
Other muliple individual winners for the Engineers were junior
Siena Sara (Queensbury, NY / Queensbury), who captured the 100 breaststroke (1:09.98) and 200 breaststroke (2:27.40) and freshman
Amanda Wang (Ardsley, NY / Ardsley), who won the 100 (59.89) and 200 backstroke (2:10.83). They also swam on the 200 medley relay team, along with
Jessica Sauve (Walpole, MA / Walpole) with Wang also participating in the victorious 400 free relay team (3:43.80).
Danielle Sauve (Walpole, MA / Walpole), who won the 100 free (54.94) was also part of the 400 free relay team that won.
Rensselaer's men saw junior Andrew Klobucher (Wenham, MA / Hamilton Wenham) win two individual events and a relay. He was first in the 200 free (1:49.42) and 100 free (49.37), while leading off the victorious 400 free relay team (3:17.61). He was joined by David Gardiner (Malta, NY / Ballston Spa), Richard Dong (Forest Hills, NY / Hunter College HS) and Brandon Koo (Little Neck, NY / Stuyvesant).
Dong also swam on the 200 medley relay team that was first to touch the wall (1:39.14) and he won the 100 backstroke (53.93). Koo also captured the 200 backstroke (2:02.65). Freshman Dan Hendricks (Superior, CO / Fairview) won the 500 freestyle (4:57.39) and the 200 individual medley (2:02.2).
Off the diving boards, freshman Alex Athanassiadis (Albany, NY / Albany) won for the first time in his collegiate career, scoring 222.05 points off the 3-meter board. Classmate Alex Chused (Wayland, MA / Wayland) won off the 1-meter with a score of 254.30.
The Engineers, who are coached by Shannon O'Brien, return to the pool on Sunday when they travel to Oneonta, N.Y., to face Hartwick College (1pm).
