RPI Athletics on TwitterUTICA, N.Y. - The Utica College women's basketball team came from behind to top visiting Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) 91-84 in non-conference action Thursday evening at the Harold T. Clark Athletic Center. The Pioneers, who had six different players score in double digits, outscored the Engineers 30-17 in the final quarter to improve to 2-1. Rensselaer drops to 1-1.
UC jumped out to a 5-0 lead to open the game and led by as many as eight in the first quarter as it took a 28-21 lead after the first ten minutes. RPI battled back in the second quarter, outscoring Utica 26-12 and taking a 47-40 lead into halftime. Freshmen
Elizabeth Eckhardt and
Sam Krumbhaar both had nine first half points, while senior
Bailei Tetrault added eight for RPI, which made 54.5 (18 of 33) of its shots to that point. The Pioneers were successful on 53.5% (16 of 30) of its shots.
Following a third quarter in wich UC held a one-point advantage (21-20), Utica regained the lead for good, 79-78 with 3:40 remaining in regulation as sophomore Alaina Tripp put in a layup for two of her 11 points on the night. The Engineers got to withiin two points on three different occasions, but could not pull even.
Eckhardt finished with a team-high 18 points with three rebounds and two assists, while Tetrault had 13 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Ashley Clough (11 points) and Krumbhaar (11) also reached double figures in scoring. The Engineers finished the game with a 49.2% (32 of 65) shooting percentage but Utica was even better at 50.8% (32 of 63).
Sophomore Ashelyne Babb collected a game-high 19 points in 25 minutes off the bench and added five rebounds to pace the Pioneers. Junior Calypso Carty had 16 points and six boards, while senior Mary Miceli netted 14 points, six rebounds, and added a team-high five assists.
Rensselaer continues its early season play with games against Babson College and Wheaton (Mass.) College on Saturday (8pm) and Sunday (1pm). Those games will be played at Williams College as part of the Ephs' season opening classic tournament.
