The first came when Carson Cooper scored a power play goal at 3:13 of the first period. Doherty carried the puck to the right point and then through the slot, where he found Cooper streaking down the left side. His shot beat RPI netminder
Jason Kasdorf for his fourth goal of the season. The Bulldogs doubled their advantage just over two minutes later when at 5:32 John Baiocco's shot slipped through Kasdorf's pads and into the bottom right corner of the net. It was Baiocco's second goal of the season.
RPI got into the scoring column at 18:33 of the opening frame with a power play goal of its own. Freshman
Mike Prapavessis passed the puck from just inside the near circle to classmate
Drew Melanson, who took a shot that was saved by Yale goaltender Alex Lyon. The rebound bounced to
Viktor Liljegren, who was waiting on the far post. He shot the puck into the net before Lyon was able to go from his right to his left.
The Bulldogs pushed their advantage to 3-1 at 1:31 of the second period on a goal from Doherty. Chris Izmirlian passed the puck to Nate Repensky, who found Doherty in the far circle. Doherty's shot ricocheted into the crease, and bounced into the net behind Kasdorf. Yale added a second power play goal at 6:16 of the second when Frankie DiChiara one-timed a shot from the far faceoff circle into the opposite side of the net. He was assisted by Rob O'Gara and Repensky, who finished with three assists.
The teams skated to a scoreless third period. Both teams had multiple chances, but each goaltender made 10 saves to keep their opponents off the scoreboard.
Kasdorf finished with 24 saves, including 10 in both the second and third periods, while Lyon, the national leader in goals against average (1.59) stopped 25 shots. Yale held a slight shot advantage over the Engineers in shots, 28-26. Rensselaer won 37-of-68 faceoffs.
