RPI FanShopTROY, N.Y. - Brianne Jenner scored a goal and recorded two assists to lead No. 10 Cornell University to a 4-1 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in ECAC Hockey action on Friday evening at the Houston Field House. With the loss, the Engineers drop to 6-23-4 overall, with a 4-16-1 league mark. The fourth place Big Red improve to 15-10-3 and 13-6-2 in conference play.
RPI got on the board first, at 18:29 of the first period, when junior
Alexa Gruschow (Mechanicsburg, PA / Washington Pride) scored her 12th goal of the season on a hard shot from the near circle that ricocheted past Cornell goaltender Paula Voorheis.
Kathryn Schilter (Aurora, ONT / Toronto Jr. Aeros) and
Amanda Kimmerle (Anoka, MN / Anoka High School) picked up assists on the tally.
Following the first intermission, Cornell tied the game at 1-1 on a tally by Jillian Saulnier. Just 3:28 into the second period, she took a shot that went wide, but it was collected by Jenner and passed to Emily Fulton, whose shot was redirected into the net by Saulnier. Jenner gave the Big Red the lead eight minutes later as Saulnier returned the favor with the secondary assist. Cornell took the one-goal lead to the second break.
The Big Red scored two more times in the third to set the final score. Kaitlin Doering put Cornell up, 3-1 at 13:16, taking assists from Hanna Bunton and Taylor Woods, while Saulnier scored her second of the day, and 13th of the season, at 16:57. Jenner handed out her 30th assist of the season on the final tally, while Fulton also recorded an assist on the goal.
Rensselaer outshot the Big Red, 24-23, while Cornell held a 30-20 advantage in faceoff wins. RPI's
Brianna Piper took the loss in goal, recording 19 saves, while Voorheis stopped 23 shots.
The Engineers, who hosted a National Girls and Women in Sports Day event at the game, return to action on Saturday afternoon, hosting Colgate at 4pm, while Cornell travel up Route 7 to take on Union College (4pm), both in ECAC Hockey action. Rensselaer will honor the senior members of the 2014-15 class n a ceremony prior to the opening faceoff.
