Game HighlightsTROY, N.Y. - Kayla Raniwsky scored the game-winner on a power play goal in the third period as No. 8 St. Lawrence University defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 2-1, in ECAC Hockey women's hockey action on Saturday afternoon at Houston Field House. With the loss, the Engineers fall to 5-21-4 overall, with a 3-14-1 mark in league play, while the Saints improve to 17-9-4 on the season, with an 11-4-3 conference slate.St. Lawrence got on the board first, as Brooke Webster (Aurora, ON) scored on a breakaway against RPI goaltender
Kelly O'Brien (Sussex, WI / Madison Capitals). Jacqueline Wand (Cary, IL) passed the puck up the ice to Webster, who carried it through the slot and shot stick side on O'Brien to give the Saints a 1-0 lead at 10:18.
Neither team was able to capitalize on multiple opportunities in the second period. St. Lawrence held a 15-12 shot advantage in the stanza, but both goaltenders kept the opposing team off the scoreboard.
Raniwsky (Windsor, ON) gave the Saints a 2-0 lead just 4:30 into the third. St. Lawrence was passing the puck around the perimeter during the first power play opportunity of the game for either team. Amanda Boulier (Watertown, CT) passed off to Hannah Miller (North Vancouver, BC), who took a hard shot at the net. Raniwsky was waiting on the far post and tipped the puck into the net.
The Engineers cut their deficit in half at 10:52 when
Taylor Mahoney (Cary, IL / Chicago Mission) scored her fourth goal of the season.
Marisa Raspa (Downington, PA / N.A. Hockey Academy) took the initial shot, and Mahoney flipped the puck past SLU's Carmen MacDonald (Pictou, NS) for the goal.
Mari Mankey (Hopkins, MN / Hopkins) picked up the secondary assist.
Rensselaer had a late power play opportunity, as one of the Saints were called for tripping at 18:54. The Engineers pulled O'Brien to get an extra skater on the ice, and controlled play until the final whistle, but MacDonald made several big saves to preserve the win for St. Lawrence.
The Saints outshot the Engineers, 35-25, and had a slight 25-23 advantage in faceoff wins. O'Brien recorded 33 saves, including all 15 shots faced in the second period, while MacDonald recorded 24 saves.
RPI returns to action on Friday, Feb. 13, at Yale University in ECAC Hockey action at 7pm. St. Lawrence takes on Quinnipiac University, also on Friday at 7pm.
