With the win, the Saints sweep the quarterfinal series, 2-0, and improve to 20-13-3 overall. The Engineers conclude their season with a 12-26-3 record.Marnell (South Huntington, NY/Des Moines Bucs) opened the scoring at 5:45 of the opening frame. Classmate Nolan Gluchowski (Wixom, MI/Sioux Falls) picked the lone helper. Just 1:05 later, the Saints made it 2-0 when sophomore Alex Dahl (Eau Claire, WI/Youngstown) stuffed home a rebound off shot by senior Chris Martin (Ottawa, ON/Indiana).
The Engineers drew to within 2-1 at 2:02 of the second period, as junior
Mark Miller (Massena, NY/Omaha Lancers) finished off a breakaway chance, firing over the right shoulder of Hayton (Denver, CO/Sioux City). The tally, which was Miller's seventh of the year, was assisted by classmate
Chris Bradley (Williamsville, NY/Youngstown Phantoms) and freshman
Lou Nanne (Edina, MN/Sioux Falls Stampede).
St. Lawrence regained its two-goal edge (3-1) late in the second. Marnell snuck behind the Engineers defense and took a two-line feed from Martin to go in alone on RPI junior netminder
Jason Kasdorf (Winnipeg, MB/Des Moines Bucs). Marnell beat Kasdorf five-hole for his second of the game and 10th of the season.
RPI applied some pressure early in the third, but could not solve Hayton, who double-digit saves in each period, including 16 in the first and 11 in each of the final two frames.
Sophomore Christian Horn (Plymouth, MN/Sioux City) netted an insurance goal at 16:58 of the final period, making it 4-1 to the hosts. Junior Sean McGovern (Milton, ON/Surrey) had the lone helper. Classmate Brian Ward (Haverhill, MA/Tri-Cities) then bagged an emty-netter with just 14 seconds remaining.
Kasdorf finished with 22 saves. RPI went 0 for 4 on the power play, while the Saints finished 0 for 3.
St. Lawrence advances to ECAC Hockey Championships, which will take place next weekend in Lake Placid, N.Y.
