MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team scored in all but two innings in defeating the College of Mount Saint Vincent, 6-2, today in non-league action. With the win, the Engineers improve to 3-1 on the season.

RPI plated a pair of runs in to the top of the first, thanks to a Dolphins error and a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Morgan Ten Eyck ( Guilderland, NY/Guilderland).

Mount Saint Vincent answered in bottom of the inning on run-scoring singles from junior Kathryn Dalton (Northampton, PA/Northampton) and sophomore Mackenzie Heizer (Vacaville, CA/Vacaville), which tied the game at 2-2.

After two scoreless innings, the Engineers took a 3-2 lead, as freshman second baseman Victoria Greco (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) drove in Morgan Ten Eyck with a single through the right side of the infield.

Rensselaer tacked on single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to extended its lead to 6-2. The team received RBI-base hits from senior Kathleen Baker (Airmont, NY/Suffern) and sophomore Courtney McArthur (Coventry, RI/St. Mary Academy) to help pad its edge.

Lefthander Victoria Helpworth (Chester, MA/Holyoke) earned the win in her first start of the season, allowing two runs on four hits over 4.1 innings. She struck out two and walked one. Sophomore Stephanie Caudle (Gainsville, FL/Gainsville) picked up her first save, closing the game out with 2.2 perfect innings. She struck out five.

Heizer shouldered the loss for the Dolphins, giving up four runs (two earned) in 5.0 innings. She had a strikeout and two walks.

Offensively, McArthur finished 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI. Junior Daneille Balestrini (Lake Placid, NY/Lake Placid) went 2 for 4 from the lead-off spot with a run scored and a stolen base. Mount Saint Vincent saw Heizer, Dalton and junior Joann Guerra (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman) all had one hit in three trips.

The Engineers are back on the diamond on Monday, when they face Kentucky Christian (11:30am) and Eureka (1:30pm). The Dolphins take on Kentucky Christian (9:30am) and SUNY New Paltz (11:30am).
