WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - David Ogilvie threw four scoreless innings of relief to help the Lawrence University baseball team to an 8-6 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), this morning in non-league play. With the win, the Vikings improve to 4-5 on the season, while the Engineers drop to 4-4.
RPI got off to a quick start, scoring single runs in the first and second innings. Senior
Nick Palmiero (Patterson, NY/Carmel) drove in classmate
Tim LeSuer (Oak View, CA/Nordoff), before
Shane Matthews (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Catholic) brought in a run with a groundout.
The Vikings responded with a three-run fourth to take their first lead of the game (3-2). Senior Joel Birch (Lisle, IL/St. Francis) capped the rally with a two-run double. A run-scoring single from sophomore Brandon Klar (University City, MO/Mary Institute and St. Louis County Day) was backed up by an RBI-groundout by senior Luke Zablocki (Pulaski, WI/Pulaski) to make it 5-2 Lawrence in the fifth.
Back-to-back doubles from sophomores
Sean Welling (Baltimore, MD/Loch Raven) and
Thomas Desmond (Alamo, CA/De LaSalle) drew the Engineers to within 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth. Lawrence came right back with an RBI-double by freshman Matthew Holliday (Hong Kong/International) to make it 6-3 in the top of the seventh.
In the bottom of the frame, LeSuer sparked a game-tying three-run rally with a double that plated classmate
Tyler Listing (West Sand Lake, NY/Averill Park) and Matthews from second and third, respectively.
Both teams remained scoreless until the 12th, when the Vikings broke through for a pair of runs. Freshman Jake Mills (Jacksonville, FL/Mandarin Christian) did the damage, scoring both with a double. Ogilvie was able to retire the Engineers in the bottom of the innings to pick up the victory.
RPI junior righthander
Stephen Schiavone (White Plains, NY/White Plains) threw four shutout innings of his own, allowing a hit and two walks, while striking out six. Starter
Sean Conroy (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) threw three hitless innings, striking out four with one walk.
The Engineers are back in action tomorrow with a non-league doubleheader against Thomas College (2pm). Lawrence is off until Friday, when it takes on Colby for a twin bill (11am).
