With the win, the Engineers improve to 2-2 on the season, while the Cardinals stand at 1-1 overall.Wesleyan scored first, getting a goal from Niall Devaney at 13:37 of the first quarter. Scott Crow recorded his first tally of the day, and took a 2-1 lead with just over eight minutes left to play in the period on a score by
Matt Hall. At 6:09,
Patrick Finn caused a Wesleyan turnover on a clear attempt, picked up the groundball, and pushed the RPI lead to 3-1 with a man up tally. However, the Cardinals would tie the score back up before the end of the first, getting a goal from Harry Stanton at 5:07 and Stephen Dodd at 1:17.
Jackson Arnold put Wesleyan back on top to start the second, with an unassisted score at 13:25. McNeally scored his first of the day at 10:12, taking an assist from Finn to knot the score up once again. The Cardinals would score twice more before the halftime break, getting back-to-back goals once again from Dodd and Arnold to give Wesleyan a 6-4 lead.
Casey Colligan assisted McNeally's second goal at 13:37 of the third quarter to pull the Engineers back to within one, but the Cardinals got unassisted scores from Devaney and Matt Prezioso to push their advantage to 8-5 with 7:05 to play in the period. McNeally ended the Wesleyan rally with his third straight goal for RPI, and his second man-up tally of the day with 5:35 to play, taking an assist from Hall to pull the Engineers back within two. Wesleyan's Lyle Mitchell sandwiched a goal by RPI's
Matthew Gilman later in the quarter, and Crow scored his second for the Engineers with just over two minutes to play to pull RPI to within 10-8 heading into the final quarter.
Neither team scored for the first half of the fourth, before RPI's
Blake Frasca scored his first collegiate goal with 9:22 left to play, closing the gap to 10-9. With just 1:09 left to play, Colligan connected with McNeally, who got his shot past Wesleyan goalkeeper Justin Schick to tie the game at 10-10, and send it to overtime. Rensselaer took two shots in the extra period, but it would only need the one from McNeally with 2:15 to play for the sudden victory.
The Cardinals outshot RPI, 34-33, in the game, but Rensselaer came away with 13-of-25 faceoff wins. The Engineers also held a 28-26 advantage in ground balls. Each team recorded nine caused turnovers. RPI goaltender
David Gibbs recorded 12 saves, while Schick finished with nine saves for the Cardinals.
Rensselaer will return to action on Saturday, visiting Oneonta in non-conference action at 1 p.m. Wesleyan will also play next on Saturday, visiting Bates in NESCAC play.
