TROY, N.Y. - Junior Laura Quicker threw a complete game shutout to lead the Ithaca College softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), this afternoon at Doris Robison Field. With wins of 6-0 and 4-3, the Bombers improve to 12-10 overall, while the Engineers drop to 14-10.
Quicker threw all 7.0 innings of game one, allowing just five hits and four walks, while striking out six. RPI senior starter
Kristina Weltzin went 4.0 innings, allowing four runs (3 earned) on five hits. She struck out four and walked one. Junior
Victoria Hepworth went the final 3.0 innings, surrendering two runs on six hits.
The Bombers broke open a scoreless game in the top of the fourth, plating four runs on four hits and one RPI error. A sac bunt by senior Monica Capolongo opened the scoring, before senior Nicole Ciricillo drove home two with a single to center. Classmate Francesca Busa capped the rally with sacrifice fly.
Ithaca added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, highlighted by an RBI-single off the bat of sophomore Kate Brainard.
In game two, the Bombers score twice in the second to take an early 2-0 lead. Freshman Emily Bloom did the damage, doubling home a pair.
In the sixth, Ithaca doubled its lead, thanks to a two-run single by freshman Hannah Peters. The Engineers then mounted a comeback in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three times on four hits. Junior
Taylor Ten Eyck got RPI on the board with a single that brought home
Lillian Kolehmainen. An RBI-ground out by sophomore
Stephanie Caudle was followed up by an infield single from senior
Jena Servidone, which brought the Engineers to within 4-3.
RPI was not able to get any closer, as Allison Macari went the distance for Ithaca, giving up three runs on six hits. Caudle went all 7.0 innings for Rensselaer, allowing four runs (2 earned) on nine hits.
The Engineers are back in action on Saturday, when they visit SUNY Cortland for a doubleheader (12pm). Ithaca visits St. John Fisher on Saturday (1pm).
