RPI Athletics on YouTubeCORTLAND, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team scored twice in the second inning and four times in the fourth and the Engineers defeated SUNY Cortland, 6-3, in the first game of a doubleheader. The host Red Dragons came back to win the second game, 9-1 in six innings. RPI is now 15-11, while Cortland moves to 22-10.
Sophomore
Stephanie Caudle (Gainseville, FL / Gainseville), the fourth place hitter, went 3 for 4 with two runs and two runs batted in and senior
Jena Servidone (East Greenbush, NY / Columbia), the fifth place hitter, was 2 for 3 with a run and two RBI to lead the offensive attack. They both contributed in each of RPI's scoring innings, including each collecting singles that scored two runs in the fourth.
Senior
Kristina Weltzin (Commerce Town, MI / Walled Lake Northern) earned the victory, allowing two earned runs on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts in seven innings. She is now 8-5 on the season.
Caudle hit a home run in the second inning of the second game to give the visitors a 1-0 lead, but Cortland scored twice in the fourth inning, three times in the fifth inning and four times in the sixth for the 9-1 victory. Diane Cork had a double and a home run and Niki Barbato also hit one out for the Red Dragons, who got a complete game three hitter from Jamie Lachall.
Three pitchers toed the rubber for the Engineers with starter
Victoria Hepworth (Chester, MA / Holyoke) taking the loss. She went four innings, followed by an inning by Caudle and two-thirds of an inning from
Sarah Harms (Wilsonville, OR / Wilsonville).
RPI returns to league play on Sunday when it hosts St. Lawrence University at Doris Robison Field beginning at 1pm.
