TROY, N.Y. - Five players recorded multiple goals to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team to a 16-5 victory over the University of Rochester, this afternoon at Renwyck Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 6-5 overall and 4-2 in the Liberty League, while the Yellowjackets drop to 8-6 and 4-3 in conference play.
After falling behind 2-1 in the opening five minutes, RPI went on a 10-0 run that spanned 18:30 of the first half. Senior
Erin Riley (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown South) and junior
Erin DeLucca (East Lyme, CT/East Lyme) each had three goals during the outburst, while senior
Jamie Wakefield (Windsor, CT/Windsor) had two goals and an assist.
Rochester brought the run to a hault with exactly one minute to play in the stanza, when sophomore midfielder Danielle Diacovo (Kingston, NY/Kingston) netted her second of the season. The Engineers marched right down the field, however, and sophomore
Sophie Hager (Nortport, NY/Northport) tallied with with just 19 seconds remaining to put the hosts up 12-3 at the break.
The Yellowjackets drew to within 12-4, 1:24 into the second half, thanks to senior captain Lauren Basil's (Buffalo, NY/Nichols School) 25th goal of the year, but RPI came right back with three in a row, to open up a 15-4 lead with 23:51 left in the game.
Diacovo scored her second of the game with 13:15, before Rensselaer freshman
Allison Claroni (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial) capped the scoring with her second of the campaign.
Hager finished with a team-high six points on three goals and three assists. She is now four helpers shy of the school's single-season record, held by
Rachel Scofield '14, who had 30 in 2013. Riley had four goals, while DeLucca had three goals and one assist. Graduate student
Meg Colitz (East Greenwich, RI/LaSalle Academy) added two goals and two assists. Senior goaltender
Erin Amarello (Griswold, CT/St. Bernard School) made three saves over the first 36:09, before junior
Heather MacLauchlan (Somers, CT/Somers) stopped one in the final 23:51.
Rochester was led offensively by Diacovo, who had two goals. Basil was joined by freshman Madeline Levy (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) and sophomore Hannah Spaulding (Cranston, RI/Lincoln School) in the goal column. Junior Maire Prosak (Jamesville, NY/Williamsville East) made three saves between the sticks for the Yellowjackets.
The Engineers are back in action tomorrow afternoon for Senior Day against Rochester Institute of Technology (2pm). It is also Think Pink! at Renwyck Field. Rochester visits Skidmore at 3pm.
