Jake Weidner combined for five goals and three assists and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institue (RPI) men's lacrosse team upended St. Lawrence University, 10-8, in a Liberty League contest on North Country Field at Hall-Leet Stadium. The Engineers, who scored eight of the first 11 goals, improve to 8-5 overall and 3-3 in the league. The Saints are now 8-6 and 4-1.
McNeally (Severna Park, MD / Archbishop Spaulding), an attack, had two goals and two assists, while Weidner (Chula Vista, CA / Otay Ranch), a midfielder, scored three times. Classmate
David Gibbs (Stony Brook, NY / Ward Melville) backstopped the win by making six saves.
Weidner opened the scoring at 12:18 of the first quarter and later gave the Engineers a 3-1 lead at 3:37 of the opening frame. St. Lawrence's Tommy Hovey made it a 3-2 score late in the first quarter when he scored with a shot over his back shoulder, but Weidner tallied his third of the game and 19th of the season five minutes into the second quarter for a 4-2 advantage.
Chaz Bell (Hopewell, NJ / Hopewell Valley), another sophomore, made it 5-2 for the visitors before McNeally scored his first of the contest. The Saints pulled to within two goals with just over a minute to go in the first half, but junior attack
Patrick Finn (North Easton, MA / Thayer Academy) answered with only five ticks remaining before the break.
Rensselaer won all six faceoffs in the second quarter.
After more than seven minutes of scoreless action in the third quarter, Finn connected with McNeally for an 8-3 lead at the 7:31 mark. St. Lawrence scored the next three goals, including two in a 20-second span late in the third quarter, to pull to within 8-6, but senior
Aaron Shavel (Lawrenceville, NJ / Princeton Day School) scored at 9:36 of the fourth for a 9-6 edge. SLU tallied the next two goals, but Shavel once again found the back of the cage, tallying his 12th of the year on an assist from McNeally with only 40 seconds remaining
as the Saints took some chances in an attempt to regain possession and tie the score.
Hovey, Jeremy Vautour and Luke Dilisio all scored two goals each for St. Lawrence. Nick Ford and Andrew Butturini combined to make eight saves in the Saints goal.
Rensselaer returns to action on Tuesday evening at 6pm when it hosts Hamilton College in a non-conference matchup at East Campus Stadium.
