Golf Tournament Sign UpTROY, N.Y. - Jared Jensen drove in pinch runner Matt Lawrence on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the tenth inning to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a 2-1 win over St. Joseph College (VT) in non-league baseball action on Monday afternoon at Robison Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 18-13 overall, while the Fightin Saints drop to 34-29 on the season.St. Joseph got on the board first with one run in the fourth inning. Nester Velazquez doubled down the right field line to get into scoring position, before coming home on a base hit by Tyler Kunzmann. Kunzmann, who was also the starting pitcher for the Fighting Saints, got the Engineers down in order in the bottom of the frame to keep St. Joseph on top, 1-0.
The Engineers tied the game in the bottom of the seventh.
Tim LeSuer (Oak View, CA / Nordhoff) drew a lead off walk, and moved into scoring position on a passed ball.
Nick Palmiero (Patterson, NY / Carmel) moved LeSuer over with a sacrifice bunt, before
Thomas Desmond (Alamo, CA / De LaSalle) hit into a fielder's choice to send the runner home.
Rensselaer got runners aboard in both the eighth and the ninth, but were unable to capitalize, sending the game to extra innings. In the bottom of the tenth,
Christian Spagnuola (Commack, NY / Commack) singled through the right side, and was replaced on the bases by Lawrence, who advanced to second on a balk by relief pitcher Dale Weidner, who was then replaced by Eric Carroll on the mount. Lawrence advanced on a passed ball, before Carroll issued a walk to
Tyler Listing (West Sand Lake, NY / Averill Park). Jensen (Kingston, NY / Kingston) knocked into a fielder's choice, sending Lawrence, who beat the throw to home to give the Engineers the walk-off win.
Sean Conroy (Clifton Park, NY / Shenendehowa) went nine innings on the mound for RPI, fanning eight and scattering four hits.
Charles Parslow (Fonda, NY / Fonda-Fultonville) threw an inning in relief, fanning one without a hit. St. Joseph starter Kunzmann went seven innings, allowing three hits and striking out four.
RPI will return to action on Tuesday, visiting Williams for a 4pm non-conference game.
