Men's Soccer Begins 2015 With Win

Engineers score four first-half goals en route to 5-0 win at Lyndon State

LYNDONVILLE, Vt. – Sophomore Jeff Willoughby netted two goals in a span of 1:57 in the first half to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Lyndon State College. With the win, the Engineers open the season at 1-0, while the Hornets drop to 0-1.

RPI opened the scoring in the 14th minute when senior captain Matt Carberry (Auburn, NY/Auburn) headed home a service from sophomore Steven Collins (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional). Less than six minutes later, junior Vito Mesiti (Slingerlands, NY/Guilderland) made it 2-0.

Willoughby (Austin, TX/Vandegrift) doubled the RPI advantage, scoring twice in quick succession. Netting tallies in the 38th and 40th minutes, he gave the Engineers a comfortable lead at halftime.

Junior Devan Baughen (Sarasota, FL/Pine View) bagged the only goal of the second half, slotting home a cross from Carberry.

HOW THEY HAPPENED:
  • Goal No. 1: Steven Collins found himself on the right side of the penalty and lofted a cross towards Matt Carberry, who headed the ball into the right side netting (14th)
  • Goal No. 2: The Engineers drew a free kick five yards from the left corner flag. Devan Baughen swung a cross towards the near post that Vito Mesiti poked in just over the line (20th)
  • Goal No. 3: Jeff Willoughby smashed in a shot on the break after receiving a pass from Tim Stevens (38th)
  • Goal No. 4: Tim Stevens delivered a cross from the left flank to Willoughby, who volleyed home his third career tally (40th)
  • Goal No. 5: Matt Carberry connected with Devan Baughen just outside the Lyndon State six to cap the scoring (69th)
