SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior captain
Matt Carberry scored his second game-winning goal in as many games to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Mount Saint Mary College, in the opening game of the Union College Soccer Classic. With the win, the Engineers improve to 2-0, while the Knights drop to 0-2.
The Engineers got on the board first in the 10th minute when Carberry (Auburn, NY/Auburn) scored off a feed from junior
Devon Baughen (Sarasota, FL/Pine View) for what turned out to be the game winner. Sophomore
Steven Collins (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) added another for RPI in the 34th minute off an assist from senior captain
Paul Lentine (Penfield, NY/Penfield) to double the lead to 2-0. A lead which the Engineers carried into halftime.
Baughen netted his second of the year in the 58th minute to cap the scoring for the Engineers.
HOW THEY HAPPENED:
Goal No. 1:
Matt Carberry finished with a header off a cross from the left by
Devon Baughen.
Goal No. 2:
Steven Collins found a loose ball off an aerial challenge just outside the six yard area and finished with his right foot.
Goal No. 3:
Paul Lentine delivered a ball in from the right flank that took a deflection before falling to
Devon Baughen at the back post. Baughen buried a left-footed volley for the goal.
SHOOTING GALLERY:
The Engineers held a strong 23-2 edge in shots over the Knights, including 10-1 on goal.
FINALLY TESTED:
RPI sophomore keeper
Ryan Nealon saw his first shot of the year in picking up his second shutout. The Engineers did not allow a shot on target against Lyndon State on Tuesday.

Devon Baughen has recorded a goal and an assist in each of his first two games for RPI. He leads the team with six points.
MORE CORNERS:
The Engineers earned 10 corner kicks, while not conceding one to Mount Saint Mary.

The Engineers face area-rival Sage College on Saturday in their second and final game of the Union College Soccer Classic. Kick-off is set for 4:30pm.
