#15 RPIMS Draws to Remain Unbeaten

Engineers score first, but settle for 1-1 tie at Babson

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Sophomore Dan McGuinness (Groton, Mass.) scored the first goal of his career in the 68th minute as Babson College and No. 9 D3soccer.com/No. 15 NSCAA Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute battled to a 1-1 double-overtime draw in non-conference men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

Babson is now 5-3-1 on the season, while Rensselaer is 8-0-1 on the year.

Sophomore Carlo Araujo (Bradenton, Fla.) and senior Andrew Gonzalez (Durham, Conn.) recorded assists for the Beavers, who got one save from senior goalkeeper Stephen Donato (Morganville, N.J.).

Senior Nathaniel Gunderson (Olympia, Wash.) scored for the Engineers, while junior Devon Baughen (Sarasota, Fla.) contributed an assist. Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Nealon (Somers, N.Y.) finished with four saves on the afternoon.

The teams combined for just three shots on frame over the opening 45 minutes, but Rensselaer grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute on Gunderson's third marker of the fall. Baughen gained possession of a long free kick up the left side along the edge of the box, took a touch inside and slotted a centering pass to Gunderson, who buried a low shot inside the right post.

The Green and White, which dominated possession over the first 12 minutes of the second half, nearly tied the game in the 49th minute but Nealon robbed senior Tyler Carlos (Prospect, Conn.) blast from the middle of the box. The Beavers finally broke through when McGuinness got a head on Araujo's service back towards goal following a corner kick at 67:55.

Both teams had opportunities to win the game late in regulation and both overtime sessions. Donato came off his line and beat Baughen to a diagonal ball from senior Matt Carberry (Auburn, N.Y.) in the 88th minute, and Carberry got space and sent his 25-yard shot just over the bar in the 108th minute. McGuinness had the Beavers best chance of extra time following a scramble in front of the goal, but his shot from point-blank range in the 96th minute was corralled by Nealon.

The Green and White finished with a 16-13 edge in shots and a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.

Babson returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Wheaton at 1 p.m., while Rensselaer takes on Hobart on Friday at 4 p.m.
