TROY, N.Y. – Freshman goaltender
Lovisa Selander stopped all 28 shots she faced to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 2-0 shutout victory over Union College, on Friday at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 6-11-4 overall (4-5-2 ECAC Hockey) and the Dutchwomen drop to 0-18-5 (0-9-2 ECAC Hockey).
Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Riksserien) was busiest in the second and third periods, stopping 11 and 10 shots, respectively, in the final two frames. Union freshman Leah Patrick (Hudson, WI/Hill-Murray High School) finished with 30 saves, including 13 in the first period.
The Engineers broke onto the scoreboard at 13:26 of the first period, when junior
Hannah Behounek (Minnetonka, MN/Minnetonka High School) rifled home a slap shot from the blue line. The tally, which was her first of the season, was assisted on by classmate
Katie Rooney (Buffalo, MN/Buffalo High School) and senior
Lauren Wash (Belle Mead, NJ/New Jersey Rockets).
After a scoreless second period, Rensselaer added an insurance goal in the third, thanks to a nifty feed from freshman
Makenna Thomas (Hartland, WI/Chicago Young Americans) that found junior
Laura Horwood (Belleville, ON/Durham West Lighting) at the side of the net for an easy tap-in. Senior
Jenn Godin (New London, NH/Tabor Academy) earned the second helper on Horwood's third goal of the year.
Union pulled Patrick with 1:34 left in regulation, but weren't able to crack the RPI defense. Both teams had a power play chance, but were unsuccessful.
