Rooney's Four Points Propel Women's Hockey Past Brown

Engineers topple Bears, 6-2, in ECAC Hockey play

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior Katie Rooney recorded four points to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 6-2 victory over Brown University on Friday at Meehan Auditorium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 8-11-4 overall (6-5-2 ECAC Hockey), while the Bears drop to 3-16-1 (1-11-1 ECAC Hockey).

The contest opened with RPI scoring 6:35 into the first period, when Josefine Hansen recorded the tally. Just at the end of the opening stanza, the Engineers increased their lead to two, when Katie Rooney scored at 18:23. RPI held a 10-2 advantage in shots in the period.

In the second period, RPI scored quickly, 1:02 into the period, when Rooney notched her second goal of the game. Amanda Kimmerle made the Engineers' lead 4-0 at 11:05 with her score. Brown increased its offense output in the second with nine shots and several chances to score but RPI's Lovisa Selander turned away all of the strikes.

Brown began its attempted comeback when freshman Cara Najjar fed a pass to Samantha Swanstrom, who was in front of the net and able to muscle the puck in, 1:48 in the final period, while on the power play. Freshman Abby Niewchas also registered an assist on the play.

Soon after, Niewchas again teamed up with Najjar and connected on a cross-ice pass, with Najjar gathering and skating along the boards, before finding Erin Conway streaking down the ice where she put home her shot from the slot.

Rooney assisted on a goal by Hannah Behounek, which halted the Bears' comeback at 6:24. Alexa Gruschow added another goal, a short-handed tally, to bring the game to its eventual final, 6-2.

The Bears recorded 10 shots in the third to bring their game output to 21, compared to RPI's 35. The Engineers were 0-for-2 on the power play while Brown was 1-for-3.

Junior Monica Elvin made a total of 29 saves in the game while Lovisa Selander recorded the win in net for RPI with 19 saves.
