POTSDAM, N.Y. - Senior
Kensey Waterman scored the game's only goal in the first half to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Clarkson University, on Friday afternoon at Hantz Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 10-3-0 (2-2-0 Liberty League), while the Golden Knights drop to 4-9-0 (0-5-0 Liberty League).
Rensselaer broke onto the scoresheet in the 24th minute, when freshman
Emily Kaplan broke behind the Clarkson defense, before serving a diagonal ball back to Waterman, who finished first-time into the top right corner of the net. The tally which was Waterman's second of the year, came on one of just two RPI shots on goal in the contest.
The teams went into halftime with four shots attempts apiece, including a 38th minute try by junior
Dali Alarian that was kept out by Golden Knights keeper Elyse Green.
Clarkson picked up its play in the second half, out-shooting RPI 9-0, but could not get one past Engineers freshman goalkeeper
Joey Lyons, who finished with six saves on the day. Four of those stops came in the second half.
After Lyons stopped Madison Kather in the 52nd minute, Summer Gillespie hit the crossbar in the 56th.
The Golden Knights then had a flurry of chances with 10 minutes to play, but two were kept out by Lyons and a third from Tori Sailor missed the frame.
One final stop was needed of Lyons in the 88th minute to secure the win, as she earned her seventh shutout of the season. Green finished with just one save for Clarkson.
Rensselaer is back in action tomorrow afternoon, when it visits St. Lawrence (2pm). Clarkson hosts Union tomorrow (2pm).
