TROY, N.Y. - Junior
Nicole Clancy scored the game's only goal with nine minutes remaining in regulation and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team defeated Vassar College, 1-0, in a Liberty League contest at Renwyck Field. The game was the final Liberty League contest of the season for both teams. RPI is now 2-4 in the conference and 8-7 overall, while the Brewers fall to 4-2 and 12-3. Vassar are now out of contention for the league regular season title but will compete in the conference tournament.
The goal by Clancy (Braintree, MA / Braintree) came at 66:55 when she picked up the ball off a deflection and scored. The play started with a pass from outside the circle intended for junior Megan Jones (Stevensville, MD / Kent Island), who was right in front the goal. She deflected it across the goal to Clancy, who tallied her first of the season and third of her career.
Sophomore
Kayla Bell (Winchester, MA / Winchester) earned the win in goal by making five saves in her third start of the season. She is now 2-1 with two shutouts. Paige Amico (Carlsbad, CA / La Costa Canyon), also a sophomore, had three stops on the other end.Â
The shots were even in the game with both teams taking seven - and both with four in the first half. Rensselaer had a 6-3 edge in penalty corners, including five in the second half.
The Engineers finish the home portion of their schedule with a game against SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday (5pm). Vassar travels to the University of Scranton on Wednesday for a 7pm contest.
