TROY, N.Y. - Junior
Steven Collins scored twice and sophomore
Danny Corridan had a goal and an assist to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Bard College in a Liberty League contest at a rain-soaked East Campus Stadium. The Engineers finish their league slate with a 5-2-1 record and have an opportunity to finish first in the regular season standings. They are 7-6-3 overall. Bard falls to 6-6-3 and 1-5-0.
The win was the fourth consecutive for Rensselaer, which has outscored its last four opponents by a 6-0 margin.
Corridan (Queens, NY / Archbishop Molloy) put the Engineers in front early in the second half when he headed a
Devon Baughen (Sarasota, FL / Pine View) corner kick into the lower left corner of the net. The goal, Corridan's first of the season, came just 1:31 into the second frame.Â
The Engineers made it 2-0 in the 68th minute when Corridan received a throw in and flicked the ball to Collins, who scored over the goalie's reach for his first of the season. There was under three minutes remaining in the contest when Collins notched his second, this one off a
Nick Revano (Metuchen, NJ / Hun School of Princeton) cross that slipped past the keeper. Collins calmly kicked it into the open goal.Â
Freshman
Matt LaBranche (Wilbraham, MA / Minnechaug Regional) made one save for his fourth win of the year. He has played each of the last five games and is now 4-1-1. Bard's Taylor Bond (Pembroke, NH / Trinity), a junior, made four saves, including three in the first half.
RPI held a 12-6 edge in shots with Collins taking five (3 on goal). Baughen added three with one on net. The Engineers also had more corner kicks, 6-1.
The next action for Rensselaer is Wednesday at Keene State at 7pm. The Raptors play at league foe Skidmore College on Tuesday at 7pm.
