Men's Soccer Wins Fifth Straight

Devon Baughen makes it nine straight games with a point in 1-0 win over Keene State

KEENE, N.H. - Senior Devon Baughen extended his point streak to nine games with a fifth minute assist on classmate Nick Revano's goal, which stood as the game-winner for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team in a 1-0 victory at Keene State College, on Wednesday night. With the win, the Engineers improve to 8-6-3, while the Owls drop to 8-8-1.

Revano scored the game's only goal on RPI's second attempt. Baughen earned the helper giving him five goals and five assists over the last nine games, with at least one point in each.

RPI continued to apply pressure over the opening 15 minutes, recording the first five shots of the game, including three on goal. Keene State then turned in a flurry of chances, starting with two shots in the 19th minute and another in the 25th. Two of those tries were blocked, while the other missed the frame.

Senior Vito Mesiti nearly doubled the Rensselaer advantage in the 28th minute, but his shot hit the crossbar. Freshman Austin Betterly's follow up was blocked by the Owls defense.

Freshman goalie Matt LaBranche then made four saves in a three-minue span to keep the Engineers in the lead. RPI took its one-goal lead to the break, despite being out-shot 11-9.

In the second half, Keene State picked up where it left off, earning a pair of early corner kicks, but were unable to convert.

The Engineers tested the Owls goal in the 61st minute, but Revano was denied the brace by Keene State goalkeeper Jason Smith.

LaBranche was forced to make his sixth and final save in the 73rd minute, keeping out an attempt by William Salta.

Rensselaer concludes its regular season schedule on Saturday, when it hosts Saint Thomas Aquinas at East Campus Stadium (1pm). Keene State welcomes UMass-Boston to town on Saturday (1pm).
