TROY, N.Y. – Junior Amanda McFarland scored just 32 seconds into overtime to lead the Vassar College women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over No. 22 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Saturday night at East Campus Stadium.
An evenly played opening 45 minutes saw the Engineers take a 1-0 lead in the 31st, capitalizing on a Brewers gaff in front of goal. Rensselaer junior center back
Bethany Hanson (Fullerton, CA/Sunny Hills) delivered a long throw in from the left touch line that deflected off of a pair of Vassar defenders, before rolling over the goal line.
RPI took its 1-0 lead to the halftime break, along with a 6-5 edge in shots.
Vassar pulled even in the 59th minute, after sophomore Rebecca Andrews (Los Altos, CA/Los Altos) was tripped at the top of the penalty area. Andrews' converted on the ensuing penalty kick, finishing just inside the right post for her sixth goal of the season.
Sophomore Megan Coughlan (Duluth, MN/Marshall School) nearly gave the Brewers the lead in the 62nd minute, when her free kick from 30 yards out skipped on RPI freshman goalkeeper
Joey Lyons (Harwood, MD/Southern), forcing her to make a reaction save off the crossbar.
Rensselaer senior
Cori Winslow (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) had RPI's best chance to score in the second half, but her 77th minute try sailed over the net from just inside the 18.
Lyons finished with four saves for the Engineers, while senior Stephanie Tapolsky (Louisville, KY/Dupont Manual) had three at other end of the field. Shots were even at 13 apiece, with Vassar finding the target six times to RPI's four.
The Engineers hit the road next weekend, when they travel to North Country-rivals Clarkson and St. Lawrence on Friday (4pm) and Saturday (2pm), respectively. Vassar visits RIT and No. 1 William Smith on Friday (4pm) and Saturday (2pm).
