TROY, N.Y. – Five different players contributed to a school-record five power play goals, as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team defeated Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), 5-1, on Friday afternoon at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 5-11-1, while the Tigers drop to 2-15-0.
Senior captain
Laura Horwood opened the scoring at 2:26 of the first period, firing a puck from the right circle, off of an RIT defenders skate and into the net. Assists went to juniors
Whitney Renn and
Amanda Kimmerle. RPI took its 1-0 lead into the first intermission, despite being out-shot 12-10.
The Engineers doubled their advantage at 8:14 of the second, when sophomore
Jaimie Grigsby finished off a feed from classmate
Makenna Thomas, right in front of the RIT goal. Thomas carried the puck up the left wing, before finding Grigsby cutting the front of the net for the one-time tally. Fellow sophomore
Josefine Hansen also earned an assist on Grigsby's third of the season.
RIT pulled to within 2-1 less than a minute later on freshman Tori Haywood's first collegiate tally. The unassisted goal came at 8:46.
Rensselaer pushed its lead back to two goals (3-1) on freshman
Sabrina Repaci's team-leading seventh goal of the season. Walking the puck towards the middle of the ice from the right circle, she fired over the glove of RIT netminder Terra Lanteigne for RPI's third man advantage tally. Helpers went to Grigsby and Hansen.
Just 10 seconds into the third period, the Engineers made it 4-0. Thomas potted her fifth of the season from Repaci. Senior
Hannah Behounek then capped the scoring at 3:09 of the frame, with assists going to sophomore
Taylor Schwalbe and Horwood.
Sophomore goaltender
Lovisa Selander (5-9-1) made 27 saves, while Langteigne (2-10-0) had 32 stops at the other end of the ice. RPI wound up 5 for 8 on the power play, which was one shy of the NCAA record, held by four different teams. RIT was 0 for 3.
The five extra-man goals are the most in a Division I game since Mercyhurst netted five against Lindenwood on October 29, 2011. Assistant coach
Christie Cicero was a member of that Lakers team.
Both teams are back in action tomorrow afternoon for game two of the series. Puck drop is set for 2pm.
