MEET TIME (OCTOBER 22, 2016): The Engineers meet the Engineers as RPI hosts WPI at Robison Pool.
WEEKEND ACTION: While Saturday's meet is the only action for Rensselaer, WPI hosted Babson, Smith and Brandeis the night before heading to Troy.
RPI AT ITHACA (OCT. 29): For the 11th consecutive dual meet, the Rensselaer men's swimming & diving team posted a victory, defeating Ithaca, 201-93 ... The Engineers women's team saw its dual meet winning streak snapped at 13 straight meets dating back to the 2014-15 season with a 180-120 loss ... RPI was led by junior
Shanny Lin, who won three events, including the 200 butterfly in an NCAA B-cut time of 2:05.97 ... Sophomore
Noah Pan won four events, including two individual races, while
John Alberta,
Mavin Liu and
Richard Dong won three times each.
WEEKLY AWARDS: The weekly Liberty League swimming & diving award winners included RPI's
Noah Pan (Men's Swimmer of the Week), classmate
Alex Chused (Men's Diver of the Week) and junior
Shanny Lin (Women's Weekly Honor Roll) ... Against Ithaca, Pan helped the 200 medley relay team to victory in a time of 1:37.44 and then went on to capture the 100 (52.58) and 200 (1:57.06) backstrokes before swimming on the victorious 400 free relay team (3:12.73) ... Chused was tabbed after defeating four others off the 3-meter diving board with a score of 252.95 and then finishing first off the 1-meter with 234.00 points ... Lin won two individual events and a relay: the 200 butterfly in 2:05.97, the 100 fly in 58.65 and the 200 IM in 2:12.83 ... She also swam on the 200 medley relay team that finished second (1:50.73).
RPI VS. RIT (OCT. 22): RPI's men's and women's swimming & diving teams started the 2016-17 season in fine fashion as both teams defeated RIT at Robison Pool ... RPI's men's team posted a 187-109 win, while the women triumphed, 198-102 ... The women won all but one event with junior
Jessica Sauve capturing three of her own ... The men won all the swimming events, led by multiple winners senior
Richard Dong and sophomore
Noah Pan.
JESSICAS RECOGNIZED:
Jessica Sauve and
Jessica Kugelman were selected for weekly awards by the Liberty League after the RIT meet ... Sauve was named the Women's Swimmer of the Week after she captured the 200 freestyle (1:58.07), the 50 free (25.33) and the 500 free (5:22.65), all after she was also part of the victorious 200 medley relay team (1:46.22) ... Kugelman was the Rookie of the Week after she took first off both diving boards, winning off the 1-meter with 212.50 points and the 3-meter with 234.45 points.Â
DONG HONORED: Rensselaer senior
Richard Dong was named the Liberty League Men's Swimmer of the Week following his performance against RIT ... He won all four of the events in which he was entered, capturing the 100 breaststroke (59.86), 100 butterfly (54.62), the 200 individual medley (2:04.11) and the 200 medley relay (1:37.66).
ROSTER BREAKDOWNS: The Engineers feature three freshmen, five sophomores, seven juniors and five seniors on the women's team ... There are 14 freshmen, 11 sophomores, three juniors and two seniors on the men's team.
UNDER O'BRIEN: In her 21-year tenure heading into this season, Rensselaer head coach Shannon O'Brien has coached 17 NCAA All-Americas and 18 Honorable Mention All-Americas ... Within the Liberty League, RPI has had seven Swimmers of the Year, 10 Divers of the Year and 10 Rookies of the Year while winning seven men's championships.
CAPTAINS CHOSEN: Rensselaer's women's team will be captained by
Anna Drechsler,
Annika Lindstrom, Barbara Long and
Siena Sara ... Drechsler and Lindstrom are second-year captains, while this is the first season in that role for Long and Sara ... All four student-athletes are seniors ... The men have two captains, both seniors in their first seasons in doing so ... They are
Richard Dong and
Andrew Klobucher.
UPCOMING: The Engineers face their first two-meet weekend next Saturday and Sunday when they travel to Vassar and host Hartwick ... Both begin at 1pm ... RPI is then idle until the Liberty League Championship.Â
