Women's Hockey Upends Brown, 4-1

Three-goal first period sends Engineers past Bears

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior captain Laura Horwood had a goal and an assist to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 4-1 win at Brown University, on Saturday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 4-7-1 (2-2-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Bears drop to 3-3-0 (1-3-0 ECAC Hockey).

RPI jumped out to a 1-0 lead, just 54 seconds into the game. Freshman blueliner Kirsten Iwanski registered her first collegiate goal, which was unassisted.

The Engineers made it 2-0 halfway through the first, as freshman Sabrina Repaci scored on the power play. Assists on Repaci's team-leading fifth goal of the year went to junior Amanda Kimmerle and sophomore Taylor Schwalbe.

Brown cut the RPI lead in half at 17:29 of the first, thanks to a man advantage tally off the stick of Sam Donovan. Helpers on Donvan's fifth tally of the season were credited to Alley Rempe and Leah Olson.

Rensselaer had the answer, however, as senior Hannah Behounek scored with just 41 seconds remaining in the frame. Horwood and classmate Katie Rooney had the assists on RPI's second power play tally of the period.

Following a scoreless second stanza, Horwood put the game out of reach with her second goal of the season. Schwalbe earned the lone assist.

Sophomore netminder Lovisa Selander (4-6-1) finished with 24 saves, including 13 in the first period. Monica Elvin (2-2-0) had 30 stops, with 14 coming in the second.

Rensselaer is back in action next weekend, when they travel to North Country-rivals No. 7 St. Lawrence and No. 8 Clarkson on Friday (6pm) and Saturday (3pm), respectively. Brown hosts UConn in a non-league game on Tuesday (6pm).
