UTICA, N.Y. - Saturday marked the season debut for both Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) track & field teams and the women and men each finished second of six schools at the Utica College Pioneer Invitational. The women, which saw four student-athletes earn wins and six place second, had 147.5 points, which was 101.5 behind the host Pioneers. RPI's men, which had four victors and three runner-ups, compiled 145.5 points, second to Utica's 252.
Junior
Monica Mazur and senior
Melinda Wilson both won an event and posted second place finishes. Mazur captured the 60 meter dash in 8.40 and was runner-up in the 300 meter dash with a time of 45.08. Wilson won the weight throw (13.93 meters) and was second in the shot put (11.40). Just behind Wilson in the weight was teammate
Renee Nuzzi, who reached 13.36 meters.
Rensselaer saw two others win sprints with sophomore
Vera Titze crossing the finish line first in the 400 dash (1:00.73) and classmate
Caroline Howes equaling the feat in the 500 (1:21.40).Â
Among those finishing second for the Engineers was
Vicky Buehler in the 60 meter hurdles (9.82), Krissy Shaughnessy in the pole vault (2.90) and
Jillian Salkind in the long jump (5.10).
The men's team was led by sophomore Jason Hall, who won the 400 dash (51.40) and was part of the victorious 4x400 relay team that finished in 3:26.22. He was joined on the relay by Michael McNicholas, Max Drexler and Dale Kelly. A freshman, Kelly had previously finished second in the 200 meter dash (22.75).
Freshman Nicholas Raghubar won in his collegiate debut in the 800 meters, finishing with a time of 2:04.90, while sophomore Terrence Lawrence won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.75. Lawrence was followed by freshman Alex Jonson, who crossed in 8.77. Jan Bartos was also a runner-up, finishing second in the 60 meter dash (7.21).
Following Utica and RPI in the men's standings were SUNY Delhi (132), Hamilton College (63), SUNY Cobleskill (44) and Mohawk Valley Community College (12.5). Delhi was also third in the women's meet with 69 points, followed by Cobleskill (59), Hamilton (45.5) and MVCC (33).
