TROY, N.Y. - Junior Jenny Scudder scored 12 straight points in the second quarter and the St. Lawrence University (SLU) women's basketball team tallied 39 of the final 50 points of the first 20 minutes on its way to defeating Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 69-48, in a Liberty League contest at East Campus Arena. The Saints improve to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the conference, while the Engineers are now 5-6 and 0-2.

Scudder (Fairport, NY / Harley-Allendale Columbia), a guard, was 4 for 4 from the field, including 3 for 3 from three-point range, and 1 for 1 from the free throw line in serving as the catalyst for the SLU run. She also added four rebounds in 11 first half minutes.

RPI opened a 6-0 lead on two baskets from sophomore Sam Krumbhaar (Glen Burnie, MD / North County) and a hoop from freshman Ines Ortea (Madrid, Spain / Fillmore Central), before the Saints' Meghan Hynes (Hopkinton, MA / Hopkinton) scored with 5:59 remaining. SLU took control from that point, outscoring the Engineers by seven points (11-4) to close out the opening frame. Shayna Davner (Scarsdale, NY / Edemont) had five of those points and Ellie Gonyeau (Hudson Falls, NY / Hudson Falls) scored four.

The second quarter started with a layup from Rensselaer's Shaina Iton (Peekskill, NY / Peekskill) but Scudder answered with three consecutive three-pointers, a free throw and a field goal for a 25-12 lead. Classmate Cara Waterson (Albany, NY / Albany) made it a 15-point run when she made a basket and was fouled for a 28-12 edge with 5:33 to play. SLU's lead twice got to 20 points before a layup by Sarah Thomas (Concord, NH / Bishop Brady) put the visitors up 39-17 at halftime.

RPI pulled to within 10 points in the third quarter behind Krumbhaar's 11 points in that period, but trailed by 13 (49-36) going into the fourth.

Scudder finished with 12 points, six rebounds, an assist and a steal in 20 minutes, while three teammates also hit double digits in points. Hynes scored 11 and Davner and Waterson each had 10 for the Saints, who shot 42.2% from the field, while holding the Engineers to 27.5%. SLU also had an advantage in rebounding, 49-32, led by Waterson and Caroline Dalton (Rochester, NY / Fairport), both of whom had eight.

Krumbhaar finished with a game-high 18 points, along with a rebound, three assists and a steal. Iton had a game-high nine rebounds with six points, an assist and two blocked shots.

The Engineers play again on Friday when they host Clarkson University in a league game (6pm). The Saints are back in action on Tuesday at 6pm against the Golden Knights.
