ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute women's basketball team ran out to a 23-6 first-quarter lead and never look back en route to a 65-49 victory over Bard College in a Liberty League game on Friday night. The Engineers improved to 8-16 overall, 4-11 in the Liberty League. Bard's season ended at 5-20, 0-16.
RPI came out firing, shooting 43 percent in the first half, including 4-for-5 from beyond the three-point line. The Engineers led by 17 after one quarter, and although Bard cut it to eight in the second quarter, the lead was 32-21 at halftime. Freshman
Sam Krumbhaar (Glen Burnie, MD) led RPI with 12 first-half points, and the guests enjoyed a 25-15 rebounding advantage in the first 20 minutes.
RPI did not allow Bard to bring the deficit back into single digits in the second half, pushing the lead to 18 by the end of the third quarter. Bard cut it to 13 early in the fourth quarter but never got closer.
RPI shot 47 percent from the field in the game, while holding Bard to 27 percent. The rebounding edge was 43-33.
Ten players scored for RPI, led by Krumbhaar, who finished with 16 points, five rebounds and two steals.
Shaina Iton added 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
Bard got 17 points and 11 rebounds from senior Tytravia Riley.
The Engineers will play their last game of the 2015-16 season on Sunday afternoon, when Vassar visits.
