NORFOLK, Va. - The Oswego State baseball team built an early lead and went on to defeat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 7-2, on Sunday morning in non-conference action. With the win, the Lakers improve to 3-0, while the Engineers are now 1-5.
A double and a wild pitch got Oswego out to a 2-0 lead after just one inning of play.
RPI fought back with a single run in the top of the 3rd, thanks to a run-scoring single off the bat of junior
Thomas Desmond, which plated classmate
Justin Valente, who had reached on a walk, before stealing second base.
The Lakers notched single runs in the 4th and 5th innings to open up a 4-1 advantage.Â
Junior
Jason Ramos singled home classmate
Sam Lawrence in the 7th to draw the Engineers within 4-2, but Oswego answered with a two-run bottom of the inning for a 6-2 edge.
Wes Randall gave the Lakers an insurance run in the 8th with an RBI-triple in the 8th. He was thrown out trying to stretch it into an inside-the-park home run.
RPI freshman
Brendan McNerney (0-1) took the loss on the hill, allowing four runs (2 earned) on five hits in 5.0 innings. He struck out two and walked two.
