Softball Sweeps Stockton, 2-0 & 6-5

Engineers improve to 3-1 after two-win Sunday

CLERMONT, Fla. – Junior Stephanie Caudle threw a complete game one-hitter to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team earn a doubleheader sweep of Stockton University, on Sunday. With the wins, the Engineers improve to 3-1, while the Ospreys drop to 0-2.

Caudle went the distance for RPI in Game 1, striking out eight and walking two, while allowing just one hit – a one-out double in the fourth.

The game was scoreless until the top of the seventh inning, when junior Courtney McArthur came through with a two-run single down the line in left. Taylor Ten Eyck and Devan Puhl came around to score on the play.

Caudle hit the leadoff batter in the bottom of the inning, but came back to get a pop up and two strikeouts to end the game.

In Game 2, Stockton built a 4-0 lead through six innings, picking up one in the third, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Rensselaer fought back with a three-run bottom of the sixth, thanks to a wild pitch and run-scoring groundouts from Morgan Ten Eyck and Victoria Greco.

A wild pick-off attempt in the seventh allowed the Engineers to tie the game at 4-4.

Following a scoreless eighth, both teams plated runs in the ninth. Samantha Shockey drove in a run with a grounder to second, which gave the Ospreys a brief 5-4 lead. RPI then pulled even, as Puhl bunted home the tying run in the bottom half.

Morgan Ten Eyck then delivered the winning run with an RBI-fielder's choice in the 10th.

Freshman Stephanie Deeb (1-0) picked up the win in the circle, allowing three runs (1 earned) on eight hits in 6.0 innings of relief. Shockey took the loss for Stockton, giving up three unearned runs on three hits in 3.0 innings.
