AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Junior
Jason Ramos hit his first home run of the season, but the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team fell to Babson College, on Wednesday at Lake Myrtle Park. With the win, the Beavers improve to 3-3, while the Engineers fall to 1-10.
RPI opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, when lead-off batter
Matt Lawrence singled, stole second and came around to score on an opposite field single by sophomore
Ethann Meister.
Babson drew even in the bottom half, as George Crowley delivered an RBI-groundout to second, scoring Jack Halpin from third.
The Beavers took their first lead of the game in the third inning on a two-run single by Eric Jaun and a wild pitch by RPI starter
Stephen Schiavone.
A two-out, two-run single off the bat of junior
Yahriel Jimenez brought the Engineers to within a run in the fifth, before Ramos tied the game at 4-4 with a solo homer to left in the sixth.
Babson came right back in the bottom of the frame to take a 5-4 lead. Jake Weiss led off the frame with a double, before a sacrifice bunt moved him to third. Halpin then singled to right, plating Weiss.
Mark Webber added an insurance run for the Beavers in the seventh, homering off the foul pole in left.
Daniel Cooney (2-0) picked up the win, toss 2.0 innings of no-hit relief, while Matt Cuneo picked up his first save of the year. Schiavone (1-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing five runs (4 earned) on 10 hits in 5.0 innings. He struck out four and walked two.
RPI is back in action tomorrow, when it takes on Ripon at Lake Myrtle Park (12:30pm). Babson faces Gallaudet at 11:30am.
