Ripon Beats Baseball in Extras, 4-3

Engineers take late lead before dropping non-league contest to Red Hawks

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Randy Finger delivered a walk-off single to help the Ripon College baseball team to a 4-3 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), in 10 innings on Thursday. With the win, the Red Hawks improve to 2-6, while the Engineers drop to 1-11.

Ripon broke onto the scoreboard in the second inning, as Michael Barnes and Jake Reinke each recorded RBI-singles.

The two starting pitchers then combined to post five scoreless frames, before the Engineers struck for one in the top of the eighth. An infield single off the bat of Sam Lawrence moved Wes Hawkins to third. He then scored as the throw to first got away.

RPI rallied for a pair of runs in the ninth, to take a 3-2 lead. With one out, junior Yahriel Jimenez singled to right. Sophomore Ethann Meister then tripled to center, plating Jimenez, before coming home on a wild pitch.

The Red Hawks drew even in the bottom half of inning, thanks to a two-out, RBI-single off the bat of Josh Oswald, who turned around a Greg Echeverria pitch to score Nick Schmitt from third.

Following a 1-2-3 top of the 10th, Finger then came through in the bottom half, driving a single down the line in right that scored pinch runner Cullen Oren from second base.

Echverria (0-3) allowed four runs on 11 hits in 9.1 innings. He struck out five and walked one. Ryan Maier (1-0) picked up the win, tossing 1.1 perfect innings, with one strikeout.

The Engineer conclude their Florida trip on Friday against Clarkson in Winter Haven (9am). Ripon faces Benedictine at 4pm and McDaniel on Friday (1pm).
