Baseball Splits League Opening Doubleheader

Engineers hold on for 7-5 win in Game 2, after losing 5-0

TROY, N.Y. - Senior Greg Echeverria went 8.2 innings to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a 7-5 win over the University of Rochester in Game 2 of a Liberty League doubleheader at Robison Field on Saturday. The Engineers, who lost Game 1, 5-0, are now 2-13 overall (1-1 Liberty League), while the Yellowjackets are 6-5 (1-1 Liberty League).

Echeverria (1-3) allowed five runs (4 earned) on seven hits. His counterpart, Dan Warren (0-2) surrendered three runs (2 earned) on nine hits in 6.2 innings. He struck out six without a walk.

Rensselaer broke a scoreless draw in the sixth inning, when Yahriel Jimenez singled through the left side on an 0-2 count, bringing home Ethann Meister.

A sacrifice fly by Weston Hawkins and an RBI-single off the bat of Jeff Sitarski gave RPI a 3-0 lead after seven innings.

In the top of the eighth, the Yellowjackets struck for two run, drawing within 3-2. Jake Meyerson delivered the big blow in the inning, plating both runs with a base hit up the middle.

The Engineers answered in a big way, scoring four runs on five hits in the bottom of the frame. Hawkins drove in two with a single to center, before Sam Lawrence scored two more with a double to right.

Rochester threatened in the ninth and eventually chased Echeverria from the game, but Adam Aponte struck out Meyerson looking to end the contest and earn his first save of the year.

In Game 1, the Yellowjackets scored five runs in the top of the seventh to earn a 5-0 victory. Evan Janifer went the distance, scattering three hits over 7.0 innings. He struck out seven and walked one.

Stephen Schiavone (1-2) allowed three runs on five hits in 6.1 innings, before giving way to Kyle LaMantia. Aponte also made an appearance, recording the final two outs of the seventh.

Sam Lawrence, Meister and Chris Holomakoff collected the RPI hits, while Pete Carrier went 2 for 4 with two RBI for Rochester. Steve Eychner chipped in with a 2 for 3 game, with a run and an RBI.

Both teams are back in action tomorrow for a doubleheader at 12pm.
