TROY, N.Y. - Junior
Matt Lawrence went 2 for 5 with two runs and two runs batted in to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a 10-6 victory over the University of Rochester in Game 2 of a Liberty League doubleheader on Sunday at Robison Field. The Engineers, who dropped Game 1, 10-1, are now 3-14 overall (2-2 Liberty League), while the Yellowjackets are 7-6 (2-2 Liberty League).
Trailing 4-2 in the third inning, Lawrence brought home classmate
Justin Valente with a single to left, drawing RPI within 4-3.
A six-run top of the seventh gave the Engineers their first lead of the day, as nine batters came to the plate. The inning started with a walk to
Christian Spagnuola, followed by six straight hits, including a two-run double to the gap in right center, off the bat of junior
Sam Lawrence, which plated
Matt Lawrence and
Tyler Stephens.Â
Rochester was able to pull two runs back in the bottom of the inning (9-6), thanks to a two-run single from Aiden Finch.
The Engineers answered with a single insurance run in the top of the eighth, as
Weston Hawkins picked up his second hit of the day, driving in Spagnuola.
Freshman
Brendan McNerney (1-2) settled down after a rough first inning to earn his first collegiate victory. He allowed four runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings, striking out four with five walks.
Kevin Ho took the loss for the Yellowjackets, surrendering five runs on four hits in 1.0 inning.
In Game 1, Rochester starter John Ghyzel (3-0) went 7.0 innings for the win, giving up a run on five hits. He struck out 12 without a walk.
The Yellowjackets scored at least one run in every inning, but the seventh, including a four-run fifth that gave them a 9-1 lead.
Six Rochester batters had multiple hits and eight drove in runs as a well balanced attack led the team to victory.
