CLINTON, N.Y. - Eight different players scored and the No. 17 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team held Hamilton College to six goals through three quarters in winning its ninth straight game, 13-10, over the Continentals. RPI improves to 10-2, while Hamilton falls to 3-10.
The Continentals jumped out to a 2-1 lead before Rensselaer scored three consecutive goals for a 4-2 advantage and the Engineers led the rest of they way. Freshman
Lucas Bastarache tied the game with 4:58 left in the opening quarter and
Matthew Gilman scored early in the second for the lead.
Oliver Kaija won the ensuing faceoff and scored just eight seconds later for a two-goal advantage.
Hamilton cut its deficit to one goal, 4-3, at 12:24, but
Matthew Gilman got that one back 1:24 later. The goal was his second of the game. The Continentals continued to battle back and Joe Ricciuti scored consecutive goals to tie the game at 5-5 with 4:29 to play in the first half.
RPI closed out the second quarter with goals from
Matt Hall and
Jake Weidner and then notched the first three goals of the second half for a 10-5 lead. Weidner earned his second of the game at 11:27,
Billy Gibbs found the back of the net just 18 seconds later and Hall connected at 9:44.
Ricciuti scored again for Hamilton, but
Breanainn McNeally and
JT Kelly made it 12-6 with 6:46 to play. The Continentals pulled to within 12-10, but McNeally's second of the game with 20 seconds remaining sealed the victory.
Gilman finished with a team-best three points (2 goals, 1 assist), while Gibbs had five ground balls and four turnovers.
David Gibbs stopped six shots for the win.
Connor Hill and
Blake Frasca caused four turnovers apiece.
Hamilton was led by Ricciuti, who scored a game-high five goals, and Sam Sweet, who added two goals and two assists. John Schisler made nine saves for the home team.
RPI returns to the field on Saturday when it hosts No. 4 St. Lawrence University in a Liberty League contest at East Campus Stadium. Game time is 1pm.
