Golden Bears win non-conference pitcher's duel

TROY, N.Y. - Sophomore Jake Kawiecki went 5.0 innings to lead the Western New England University baseball team to a 4-1 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), in non-league action at Robison Field on Thursday. With the win, the Golden Bears improve to 24-9 overall, while the Engineers drop to 10-21.

Kawiecki (Burlington, CT/St. Paul Catholic) allowed just one run on four hits to improve to 3-0 on the season. He struck out two and walked one. RPI received 3.0 innings from freshman righthander Patrick McMackin (South Burlington, VT/South Burlington), who as making just his second collegiate start. He surrendered two runs (1 earned) on two hits, with a strikeout and two walks.

The Golden Bears broke onto the board in the top of the first inning, when senior Doug Milne (Nesconset, NY/Smithtown East) lifted a sacrifice fly to left, plating classmate Kevin Marciano (Pepperell, MA/North Middlesex Regional).

Senior Eduardo Colmenares (Caracas, Venezuela/Henry Clay) made it 2-0 in the third as he launched his third home run of the year over the fence in left.

RPI sophomore Weston Hawkins (Fleetwood, PA/Fleetwood) answered with a homer of his own - the first of his collegiate career - in the bottom of the inning, lining a shot into the trees behind the left field wall.

The visitors got the run back in the fifth, however, when freshman Erik Lacaire (Worcester, MA/St. Peter Marian) drove an RBI-single to left, scoring Colmenares from second.

An opposite field base hit off the bat of Marciano brought home an insurance run in the ninth for Western New England, which recorded eight hits in the game.

Rensselaer junior Mike Paleologopoulos (South Hadley, MA/South Hadley) went 3.0 innings in relief of McMackin, allowing a run on three hits, striking out three. Classmate Jack Krasovec (Haverhill, MA/St. Johns Prep) went 2.0 innings, giving up one unearned run on two hits.

The Engineers are back in action on Saturday, when they host Vassar College in a Liberty League doubleheader at Robison Field (1pm). Western New England hosts Curry on Saturday (12pm).
