Echeverria goes the distance, but Engineers falter in league tournament opener

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. - Senior Greg Echeverria threw a complete game, but the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team fell to Union College in its first game of the Liberty League Tournament, on Thursday at Shuttleworth Park. With the win, the Dutchmen improve to 24-12, while the Engineers drop to 14-26.

Union senior lefty Jake Fishman (7-0) delivered his third complete game shutout of the season, allowing just four hits and striking out 10. Echeverria (2-8) allowed three runs (2 earned) on eight hits in 8.0 innings. He struck out six without a walk.

The Dutchmen broke onto the board in the bottom of the second, when freshman Anthony Amoroso (Monroe, CT/Masuk) singled home sophomore Harrison Glatt (Summit, NJ/Newark Academy), after doubled to the gap in left center.

Five scoreless innings followed, with Union adding a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Senior Eric Egan (Latham, NY/Shaker) drove in the first with a grounder to short. RPI sophomore Ethann Meister (Santa Teresa, NM/Santa Teresa) came home with the throw that got away from senior catcher Chris Holomakoff (Norwalk, CT/Brien McMahon), allowing Fishman to score.

Glatt then singled with Egan in motion off of second to make it a 3-0 game.

Amoroso went 2 for 3 with a run batted in, while Glatt was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI. Sophomore Jake Vesling (Doylestown, PA/New Hope-Solebury) wound up 2 for 4.

RPI was led by sophomore J.T. Sawyer (Johnsonville, NY/Hoosic Valley), who went 2 for 3. Junior Thomas Desmond (Alamo, CA/De LaSalle) was 1 for 3, while sophomore Christian Spagnuola (Commack, NY/Commack) was 1 for 4.
