POTSDAM, N.Y. - SUNY Potsdam scored in the 26th minute and then held off the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team, winning the non-league contest 1-0 held at Maxcy Turf Field. RPI falls to 2-3-1, while the Bears improve to 5-1-1.
The Engineers had multiple solid chances to tie the score in the second half, but were turned away. In the 71st minute, senior
Vito Mesiti found himself all along in from of the net when he collected a cross from the right corner, but his shot went just over the crossbar in the middle of the net.
Fifteen minutes later, senior
Devon Baughen sent a cross into the box from the left side, but it skipped over freshman
Brandon Pirog's foot and wide of the net on the right side for a Potsdam goal kick.
The Bears took the lead in the when Isaac Sanabria knocked down a clearing attempt with his chest and kicked the ball into the left corner of the net. The goal was the first of the season for the sophomore.
Jake Mitchell made three saves for Potsdam, which held an 8-7 edge in shots. RPI, which had a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks, got two saves from
Ryan Nealon.
The Engineers play next on September 21 when they travel to Williams College (4:30pm). They make their home debut on September 24 against the University of Rochester (5pm).
