Williams Tops Men's Soccer, 1-0

Ephs get second half goal in non-league victory

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Mohammed Rashid scored his team-leading third goal of the season to lead the Williams College men's soccer team past Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 1-0, on Wednesday at Cole Field. With the win, the Ephs run their record to 5-1-0, while the Engineers drop to 2-4-1.

Both teams struggled to find their offensive rhythm for the entirety of the first 45, which was primarily between the boxes.

Towards the end of the half, the Ephs started to pick their play with two narrow misses from freshman Damian Gass. The first miss came in the 36th minute, when Gass gathered a ball played ahead from sophomore Eric Hirsch, but hit it just outside the right post. Five minutes later, junior midfielder Tom Young hit a corner that found its way to Gass, but he headed it high.

Both teams picked up their pace of play in the second half, which turned into chances at both ends. RPI generated an opportunity in the 55th minute, when freshman midfielder Austin Betterly got the ball at the top right edge of the box, evaded a defender and ripped a shot that went just over the bar.

In the 63rd minute, senior Devon Baughen shot the ball from within a scrum right in front of the goal, but Christian Alcorn just tipped it away to preserve the scoreless match.

The game's only goal came in the 73rd minute on a play Malcolm Singleton started with a run down the left side of the field. Singleton made a move inside and passed between RPI defenders to Rashid, who fired over Ryan Nealon's shoulder and into the top right corner.

On the match, Nealon recorded three saves, while Alcorn had one save.

Williams starts its road trip on Saturday with a matchup against Amherst (2:30pm), while RPI heads home, for the first time in 2016, to host the University of Rochester on Saturday (4pm).
