Box Score WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Freshman Alison Lu converted a penalty kick in the second half to lift the first-ranked Williams College women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Sunday at Cole Field. With the win, the Ephs improve to 5-0, while the Engineers drop to 4-1.
The Ephs controlled much of the run of play, creating a plethora of chances in the opening quarter of an hour. However, the RPI defense weathered the storm that came their way.
Williams out-shot the Engineers 9-0 in the opening stanza, but corner kicks were even at 2-2.
In the 57th minute, Lu, having scored from the spot in the first game of the season, rolled the ball into the back of the net, sending her first-year counterpart in goal,
Joey Lyons, the wrong way and ending a scoring drought.
Rensselaer had few chances fall their way in either half, but their best chance at equalizing came with six minutes left on the clock. Junior
Sara Harper picked out the run of freshman
Jacqui Richard, who got behind the Eph defense, but she couldn't sneak her shot past Williams goalkeeper Olivia Barnhill.
Lyons finished with a career-high six saves, while Barnhill had just one.Â
RPI will look to bounce back from the first loss of their season when they travel midweek to Hartwick College to play their sixth non-conference opponent of the season on Wednesday (7pm). Williams travels to Amherst on Saturday (12pm).
