COLONIE, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's cross country team had five competitors finish in the top 10 overall and the Engineers finished first in a season opening meet between five Capital Region schools hosted by Siena College at Colonie Town Park. RPI's women's team was second, led by an 11th place finish from senior captain Mary West.

Senior Ben Fazio and sophomore Grant O'Connor finished together to pace the men over the 5670 meter course with Fazio crossing in third place and O'Connor in fourth. They were both clocked at 18:28 in the race, which was hand-timed. Freshman Jordan Kolpak, senior Matthew Cicciu and junior Matthew Stewart were 7-9, all with a time of 18:45.

Garrett Davis and Sean O'Connor were just outside the top 10, finishing 11th and 12th, respectively, at 11:46.

Siena's Nick Cornine finished first at 18:20 to help the Saints to second place, three points behind RPI's 34. Union College was third (78), followed by the College of Saint Rose (111) and Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (inc).

The winner on the women's side was Siena, which had the top five runners in compiling a team score of 15 points. Sarah Forman won the 4000 meter race in 15:09. Rensselaer had 74 points to finish second, while Saint Rose was third (80), ACPHS was fourth (93) and Union was fifth (121).

West, who paced the field early on, crossed in 15:20 to score in 10th and finish 11th overall. Teammates Karina Bolton and Allison Thayer were 16th and 17th, though scoring higher at 13th and 14th, with identical 16:02s.

A pack of four - Arial Hendrickson, Taylor MacEwen, Maggie Bond and Jessica Squeri - were the next four for the Engineers, all crossing in 16:28. Hendrickson, Bond and Squeri are each freshmen, while MacEwen is a senior.
