TROY, N.Y. – Senior
Cori Winslow scored her first goal of the year to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a 1-0 win at Hartwick College, on Wednesday night. With the win, the Engineers improve to 5-1 overall, while the Hawks drop to 4-3.
Winslow ran onto a through ball from junior
Stephanie May and slotted home her 14th collegiate goal in the 22nd minute. The tally came moments after Hartwick goalkeeper Megan McGillycuddy stopped an attempt from RPI freshman left back
Jeanine Moreau.
In the 26th minute, Winslow directed a
Maddie Steinmetz corner on frame, but McGillycuddy was able to keep it out. Steinmetz then misfired in the 30th minute and the Engineers were forced to settle for a 1-0 lead at the break.
May saw her 53rd minute try saved by McGillyCuddy, before freshman
Jacqui Richard was turned away three minutes later.
After classmate
Ali Zumpetta missed high in the 56th minute, Winslow nearly made it a double, but her hard shot went just wide of the post.
RPI had a barrage of attempts at the Hawks goal with 10 minutes to play, but only one – May's team-leading fifth of the game – found the target. McGillycuddy was there for one of her six saves in the night.
Freshman
Clara Johnson made a darting run through the Hartwick penalty area in the 88th minute, but her shot was blocked out for a corner.
Rensselaer held the Hawks to just two shots in the game and freshman goalie
Joey Lyons was not forced to make a save.
The Engineers conclude their three-game road trip on Saturday when then visit Manhattanville (4pm). Hartwick visits Ithaca for an Empire 8 match on Saturday (12pm).
