ORONO, Maine – Freshman Tereza Vanisova had a goal and an assist to lead the Maine University women's hockey team to a 2-0 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the second game of a two-game series, on Sunday. With the win the Black Bears improve to 1-1, while the Engineers drop to 1-1.
Rensselaer sophomore goalie
Lovisa Selander made 16 saves in the opening period, including a highlight-reel right pad stop with 8:13 remaining in the frame.
Maine got the scoring just 22 seconds into the second period on Kara Washer's first goal of the season. The man advantage tally was assisted on by Vanisova and Vendula Pribylova.
Rensselaer nearly pulled even five minutes later, but a senior captain
Laura Horwood fired wide and junior
Whitney Renn hit the pipe from close range on the power play.
The Engineers survived a 5-on-3 shorthanded situation, despite a handful of Black Bears point blank chances that were either turned away by Selander or missed wide.
Midway through the third period, Maine added an insurance goal for a 2-0 lead. Vanisova took a feed from Pribylova to double the host's advantage at 9:41 of the frame.
Rensselaer pulled Selander for an extra attacker with a minute remaining, but couldn't sneak a puck past Maine goaltender Mariah Fujimagari, who finished with 20 saves, including 10 in the third period. Selander had 29 stops in total, as the Black Bears held a 31-20 shots advantage.
Maine finished 1 for 6 on the power play, while Rensselaer was 0 for 6.
The Engineers are back in action next weekend, when they host Ohio State for a two-game series, starting on Friday night (6pm). Maine travels to Quinnipiac for a pair next weekend. That series also begins on Friday (6pm).
