TROY, N.Y. – The Ohio State University women's hockey team scored two goals in the first two minutes of the game, on its way to a 4-1 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Friday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Buckeyes open the season at 1-0, while the Engineers drop to 1-2.
Freshman Samantha Bouley (Stittsville, ON) got the scoring started just 1:03 into the game, gathering a rebound and sticking home her first collegiate goal. Sophomore Maddie Fields (Oakville, ON) and freshman Olivia Soares (Hanover, MA) each had shots saved by RPI sophomore goaltender
Lovisa Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Riksserien), before Bouley was able to finish into an open net.
Sophomore Erin Langermeier (Westlake, OH) turned the Engineers over at the offensive blue line and rushed in for a breakaway goal 45 seconds later for a 2-0 lead. The unassisted tally was her first of the year and second of her career.
The Buckeyes made it 3-0 at 11:51 of the first, capitalizing on an offensive zone face-off win. Sophomore Jacyn Reeves (Holmen, WI) played puck back up the wall to the right point for junior Jessica Dunne (O'Fallon, MO), who found Jincy Dunne (O'Fallon, MO) in the middle of the blue line for a one-timer. Dunne's shot found its way through traffic and past Selander for her first Ohio State tally.
After a scoreless second period, in which RPI out-shot the Buckeyes 11-7, it was Ohio State who scored first in the third, as senior Katie Matheny (St. Louis, MO) found herself 1-on-1 with Selander bellow the hash marks. Matheny chipped a shot inside the right post for a 4-0 lead.
Unsuccessful on its first seven power play chances, the Engineers were able to come through in the dying moments of the game. With Selander pulled for an extra attacker, freshman
Sabrina Repaci (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) flipped in her first collegiate goal with four seconds to play. Assists on the man advantage tally went to junior
Shayna Tomlinson (Gilford, NH/Assabet Valley) and senior
Katie Rooney (Buffalo, NY/Buffalo High School).
Selander (1-2) finished with 18 saves, while Ohio State sophomore Kassidy Sauve (Whitby, ON) had 34, including 12 in the first and third periods.
Both teams are back in action for game two of the series, tomorrow afternoon at 3pm.
